When Characters Hijack the Plot: Writing Spark Transform
When I first mapped out the Central Galactic Concordance space opera romance series, I planned a tidy five- or six-book arc. Stories have a way of growing, though, and characters rarely stay in their assigned lanes. In fact, some will brazenly hijack the starship. As a result, this overarching space opera story arc will comfortably run ten or eleven books before the stardust settles.
Case in point: the two heroes plot hijackers of Spark Transform.
If you had told me earlier in the series that Arco Charrascos and Faraday Brenner would share top billing, I would have laughed. Brenner entered the series as an unwilling enforcer for a corrupt superior. However, he surprised me by growing a conscience, defying orders, and helping a heroine escape. Meanwhile, Charrascos worked quietly in the background as an intrepid investigative journalist. She was building a career by exposing the dark secrets of the Citizen Protection Service (CPS).
They were never supposed to collide. Then, in the climax of Jumper’s Hope (Book 5), Arco’s search for the truth led her straight to a bombed-out building. She pulled a battered Brenner from the rubble and saved his life.
That single, unplanned moment in the ruins sparked this entire story. Once those two crossed paths, my neat outline didn’t stand a chance.
The Friction of Reluctant Allies
At its heart, Spark Transform is about the uncomfortable reality of personal change. Real change is hard. If it were simple, everyone would do it. More often than not, growth requires setting aside the very armor that kept you alive yesterday.
Following a deadly ambush, Arco loses her security team. She faces an immediate dilemma. She can retreat to safer assignments under corporate media control, or she can keep digging into dangerous CPS conspiracies. Seeking the truth means hiring someone who knows the city’s ruthless underbelly and cannot be bought. So, she contacts the damaged ex-enforcer who owes her his life, fully expecting him to tell her to get lost.
Brenner, on the other hand, is finished being at anyone’s mercy. He is nursing deep trauma and an urgent appetite for revenge against the agency that betrayed him. In fact, his main objective is to find whatever purpose the universe has planned for him and reject it completely.
Even so, debts must be paid. To keep Arco alive, Brenner must table his vengeance. To let him guard her, Arco must place her life in the hands of a lethal man whose methods clash with her ideals. Trust becomes their steepest climb.
When the “Greater Good” Goes Wrong
Every compelling conflict needs a formidable counterweight, which brings us to CPS Administrator Jane Pennington-Smythe.
Jane is terrifyingly rational. A former statistical analyst turned high-level fixer, she sincerely believes her actions will protect galactic peace. However, her version of sacrifice is monstrous. She calculates that wiping out twenty percent of a major city is an acceptable loss to crush a brewing rebellion.
That stark contrast defines the book’s core theme. Even well-meaning people will force sacrifice onto others in the name of the “greater good.” Genuine heroes face the mirror and decide what they must surrender within themselves to do what is right.
Sometimes the best stories come from the rogue characters who refuse to stay in the background and do what they’re told by well-meaning authors. Spark Transform has been long-awaited by patient readers — and by me, too. I hope you enjoy watching Arco and Brenner steal the show as they navigate high-stakes danger, slow-burn romance, and the transformative power of finding common ground.
